Scottsdale, Arizona, cardiologist Dr. Rajan Bhatt leads practices such as Spectrum Dermatology & Vein Center and Spectrum Plastic Surgery. One of the specialized treatments that Dr. Rajan Bhatt and his team offer in addressing hair loss is platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
Platelets are one of the four main components of blood (along with plasma and red and white blood cells) and are associated with cell regeneration and growth. In a plasma state, the platelets are concentrated five times more than in normal blood, which boosts the power of the growth factors they secrete in regrowing tissue and healing wounds. When treating hair loss, PRP is first produced by drawing blood from the patient and centrifuging it, with the PRP separating to the bottom. This PRP is then injected deep into the scalp, at the bottom of the hair follicles. Here, the PRP stimulates dermal papilla cells, which are responsible for hair growth. PRP therapy is typically used to address hormone-related baldness (androgenetic alopecia - AGA), which impacts both women and men. In many cases, it’s undertaken in conjunction with other AGA treatments, such as oral finasteride and topical minoxidil (Rogaine). The therapy also holds promise for conditions such as stress-related hair loss and non-scarring autoimmune-related hair loss, though more research is needed in this area.
