Heart disease ranks the leading cause of death in the United States, with approximately 696,962 deaths yearly. All cancers combine for just over 602,000 deaths annually, ranking second in the nation. There are a large number of risk factors that can influence an individual’s heart health, such as living with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Environmental factors can also influence a person’s risk for heart disease, including exposure to secondhand smoke or living with a body mass index (BMI) that qualifies as obese. Regardless of a person’s weight, diets lacking proper nutrition have also been associated with an increased risk for heart disease. On the other hand, individuals can mitigate their likelihood of developing heart disease by maintaining a proper diet, avoiding tobacco and nicotine products, and engaging in adequate physical exercise. The average American adult should engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity weekly.
